Survey Guide Notes

[EDITED 3 May 2011: This is an amended version to the previous one posted]

The following notes are for guidance in filling out the questionnaire in support of Southampton’s Children’s Cardiac unit.

Q1 – Strongly agree to all.

Q2 – Summary of comments on how QUALITY is important, parent accommodation on-site, importance of survival & mortality rates. Don’t worry about repetition in the free-form boxes, it will only enhance the importance of these points.

Q3-Q5– Avoid answering (unless you have some experience)

Q6 – Comment on Q5 (a): is the service not safe now?

Q7 – Tick to support 2 surgical centres in London.

Q9/Q10 – OK to leave blank.

Q11 ‘OPTION B’‘Strongly support’ and for OPTION A, C & D tick “Strongly oppose”

Q12 – Tick ‘Option B

Q13 – Tick ‘None of these’

Q14– Tick ‘Option B’ is best as it has;

  • Centres scoring highest for QUALITY.
  • Centres with the best survival rates for surgery.
  • The centres which already undertake complex surgery.
  • Provides excellent access to patients from all parts of the country.

Southampton in particular came 2nd in the independent review last year, has very low mortality rates (better survival post operative). Does all the complex surgical procedures and has families travelling from afar because of the renowned world class reputation.

Q15 – TICK the following only: Alderhey, Birmingham, Newcastle, SOUTHAMPTON, Great Ormond Street & Evelina Hospital.

Q16COPY Q14 RESPONSE.

Selected the top 3 highest quality scoring hospitals from Sir Ian Kennedys review because Patient choice is a fundamental principle of the NHS and this review needs to consider our preferred choice through this response, parents/patient choice will always be based on Quality as we wouldn’t ever want our child’s health compromised by treatment at a lower quality centre!

Q17 – Tick ‘Strongly agree’

Q18 – Diagram in the consultation document (pg 109) is inaccurate and therefore misleading as Southampton takes patients from postcodes that are attributed on the map to Bristol. Eg.PL, DT, some of TA & BA. (Dorset, Plymouth, Bath etc). Discrepancies in the document do not give credibility to this process and do not allow the responder to make an accurately informed choice about where they would like their child treated. It is leading parents to believe their child will be treated in Bristol although they are currently treated in SOUTHAMPTON! Therefore patient choice removed!

Q19Q29, please answer as appropriate to your circumstances.

Q30 – IMPORTANT PLEASE ENTER YOUR POSTCODE.
